Thinking of Buying a Tortoise?
Firstly, buy British! Many tortoises that are imported from abroad (even ones with certificates saying they have been captive bred) are taken from the wild.
Not only does this mean that wild tortoises are becoming endangered but the cost to you in terms of vets’ bills and heartache may well also be prohibitive.
A tortoise that is taken from the wild, transported long distances in terrible conditions and not used to our British climate is not likely to be the healthy, happy life-long pet that you want.
Secondly, the next thing to decide is whether you want a tortoise that hibernates or one that does not. There are pros and cons with each type of tortoise, so make sure you choose a species that suits you, and that you are fully aware of what requirements your new pet will have.
Don’t forget some species of tortoise get very large as adults so you have to think about what requirements they have as hatchlings and also the completely different requirements they will have when fully grown!
If you are thinking of buying a tortoise then read our tortoise care page for simple advice on tortoises, and when you are ready to learn more the Tortoise Trust website has more in depth information. Next read our hibernating and non hibernating tortoises pages to find out which species will suit you best, and then have a look at our British Breeders page to find a breeder near you! Our accessories page and classified ads page will help you with further ideas and products to help you keep your tortoise as well as it deserves!
We aim to:
∙ make British bred tortoises available to everyone in the UK and educate the public as to why they should buy British bred tortoises as opposed to imported tortoises.
∙ conserve wild populations of tortoises and reduce the amount of tortoises imported into the UK.
∙ offer information and advice to tortoise keepers and improve tortoise welfare.
We aim to support British tortoise breeders by:
∙ providing up to date information on husbandry and legislation and encouraging successful breeding programmes,
∙ establishing a network of breeders to support each other and have a voice in terms of new legislation,
∙ providing advertising for British breeders in the form of a list of British breeders the public can contact directly and a classified section for private advertisements. (The website will soon be optimised and on the front page of Google in a ‘tortoises for sale’ search and will be advertised widely in at least two national magazines and on many other websites).
If sales of British bred tortoises increase then the need for imported tortoises will naturally be reduced, also improving tortoise welfare and conserving wild populations of tortoises. LET’S WORK TOGETHER!
